Which brand of synthetic oil is the best?

Motor oil is critical for getting the longest service life from your car’s engine: It lubricates the engine’s internal parts, minimizes wear, disperses heat, and helps prevent corrosion and sludge buildup. After using various grades of engine oils, we have our own rating of manufacturers of engine oils.

What is engine oil?

Engines must always have sufficient lubrication to prevent premature wear or overheating. These lubricants are clearly marked and have different properties. Here we must distinguish between. Multigrade oils can be used throughout the year.

What is the function of engine oil?

In our engine oil test, we would like to show you what functions this lubricant has. In general, engine oil performs the following tasks:

  • Lubrication
  • Cooling
  • Cleaning
  • Corrosion protection
  • Sealing

In an engine, many moving metal parts interact with each other. This creates natural friction, which is largely reduced by an oil film. Engine oil prevents these metal parts from jamming and promotes mobility. Oil forms a permanent oil film that has the properties of remaining thin at cooler temperatures and does not break off even at higher temperatures.

As a lubricant, however, engine oil also performs the function of a coolant. A special oil circuit cools the engine oil that has warmed up in the engine, thus providing additional engine cooling. At the same time, dirt particles produced during the operation of the cylinders are flushed out and then remain in the oil filter after passing through the oil pan. For this reason, regular oil changes are particularly important. However, not only should new engine oil be filled in, but a new oil filter should also be installed.

At the same time, however, engine oil also serves as corrosion protection. Metal can corrode due to atmospheric moisture. We also generally speak of rust formation here.

Finally, engine oil also has a sealing function. Compression is established between the cylinder and the cylinder head via the cylinder head rings. These rub involuntarily against the inner wall of the respective cylinder. Without engine oil, intense heat and wear would occur here, leading to engine damage.

For this purpose, the engine oil forms a thin filter between the cylinder wall and the cylinder head ring. This is consequently an additional seal that leads to higher compression.

Advantages & areas of application

Engine oil is primarily found in the automotive sector. Both gasoline and diesel engines require a sufficient amount of engine oil for lubrication. Understandably, less oil is needed in passenger cars than in a truck, for example.

The respective operating manuals for these vehicles list exactly how many liters the respective engines can hold.

Multigrade oils

Multigrade oils usually consist of low-viscosity base oils, so that good winter suitability is ensured. Furthermore, these oils are provided with additional additives. This ensures sufficient viscosity at higher temperatures. These additives are, for example, polymers, polyisobutylene or polyester. They are more like thickeners so that these multigrade oils can be used all year round.

The only problem is that multigrade oils lose their viscosity over a longer period of time. They must therefore be changed at regular intervals. Nevertheless, their shelf life is longer than that of monograde oils.

Advantages of multigrade oils

  • high viscosity range
  • can be used all year round
  • need to be changed less frequently than monograde oils

Disadvantages of multigrade oils

  • lose viscosity in the course of service life
  • are more expensive

The distinction by type of production

Many people think that motor oil is made exclusively from petroleum. This is not true in all cases. Therefore, we must distinguish the oil according to the method of production.

The original motor oil is also called mineral oil and comes directly from a petroleum refinery in the form of distillation. In addition, there is also semi-synthetic oil, which consists of a mixture of mineral and synthetically obtained base oils. Finally, we must not fail to mention synthetic oil, as this is produced exclusively by synthetic means. Synthetic oils are of very high quality and are mainly used in high-powered vehicles.

If only low mechanical friction and optimum fuel economy are important, then a low-viscosity oil is exactly the right choice. In this case, low-viscosity base oils are combined with high-quality additives so that a high viscosity is always achieved under extreme loads. However, low-friction oils cannot be used with every engine. If you decide to use them, be sure to ask the manufacturer for approval. In most cases, low-viscosity oils have a low-temperature viscosity of 0w or 5w.

Longlife oil

Lately, long-life oils have been the talk of the town. These are also low-viscosity oils, but they require much longer service intervals. As the name suggests, you can drive a vehicle with long life oil much longer without an oil change than when using conventional multigrade oil. The only thing to keep in mind here is that the vehicle and the installed engine are designed exclusively for long life oil. Mixing it with other types of oil can cause damage.

Some of our engine oil comparison test winners are equipped with smooth running and longlife properties. With additional additives, these oils are not only supposed to be particularly gentle on the engine but also produce high fuel savings. Precise tests in this respect could not be carried out here, as fuel consumption differs from model to model and the various engine types.

Nevertheless, synthetic engine oils with smooth-running properties can be said to have a positive effect. If, on the other hand, you rarely want to change your oil, then you should take a closer look at the Longlife products. However, both low-friction and long-life oils can only be used without problems after approval by the vehicle manufacturer.

Here are some of the most important additives you’ll find in synthetic oils, but remember that you won’t find them all together in one oil:

  • Defoamer. This helps to prevent synthetic oil from foaming.
  • Antioxidants extend the life of the oil by slowing down the oxidation.
  • Cleaning agent to prevent deposits and dirt accumulation and to clean an engine.
  • Wear a protection agent to extend the life of an engine.
  • Dispersion agent for preventing sludge accumulation and clumping of particles
  • Corrosion inhibitors to protect your vehicle engine from corrosion

Consider these factors when buying synthetic oil, and you will get the best oil for your car. Let’s take a closer look at the two types of synthetic oil

Which engine oil should you use?

Ideally, your synthetic engine oil should withstand this temperature. If you follow the above table, a 0W20 would be close to the limit (10°C). This is exactly the kind of situation you need to avoid. A better option in this scenario is a synthetic 5W30 engine oil.

Which engine oil should you use in summer?

Let’s say the average ambient temperature in summer is 28°C. The 5W30 engine oil would be in a similar situation to the 0W20 in winter. A slightly degraded oil may not retain its properties if it is closer to its operating limit. The solution would be to use a 5W40 in summer.

For this hypothetical example, a 5W40 would even be the ideal engine oil for all seasons. Remember that other considerations may also be relevant. If a synthetic SAE 5W30 API SN Plus engine oil is specified in your manual, you can be sure that it can be used at temperatures above 30°C and thus closer to the 35-38°C limit.

As you can see, in addition to the SAE viscosity class, there are other important engine oil specifications that you should consider.

1. API Service Classification
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is responsible for certification when oil meets certain OEM quality and performance standards. Over time, the conditions for obtaining certification may change due to higher OEM quality requirements.

The latest API Oil Certification (SN PLUS) was approved on November 9, 2017. API SN Plus certification goes beyond all previous classifications, i.e. any engine oil that has API SN Plus certification can be used on older vehicles. The opposite is not the case. If your user manual recommends an API SN Plus engine oil, do not use a lower oil such as API SJ or SM.

2. ACEA Classification
The Association des Constructeurs EuropĂ©ens d’Automobiles (ACEA) is the European hom*olog of the American API service classification. The A/B class is used for passenger car engine oils accompanied by a number representing the category. The higher the number, the lower the oil viscosity and the longer the maintenance intervals.

3. Manufacturer specific certifications
In some cases, you will find additional certifications in the product description, e.g. GM dexos1. In addition to industry standards, vehicle manufacturers have developed their own engine oil specifications. This is another reason to read the manual and check the exact engine oil for your engine.

Various types of synthetic oil

There are two types of synthetic oil: fully synthetic oil and synthetic blend. Since the introduction of both products in the 1960s, there has been a debate between people who prefer fully synthetic oils to synthetic oils and vice versa. We are here to shed more light on these two to help you choose the best for your engine.

  • Full synthetic oil

For many, this is considered to be the most superior of the two oils. They are designed for high-tech automotive engines and typically provide long-lasting performance in terms of deposit protection and viscosity index. These types of oil are more popular and newer car models are designed to accommodate these.

On the other hand, however, they are very expensive and cannot be used for older car models as not all car engines can accommodate full synthetic oils. You can read your car’s owner’s manual to find out if it can hold this oil.

  • Synthetic blend oil

This is a mixture of natural oil (standard engine oil) and synthetic oil. This type of oil is less volatile, reduces oil loss and evaporates less. Blending with standard engine oil makes it a cheaper option and is therefore a popular choice for people with SUVs and pickups. However, they are not fully regulated as there are no established standards for the concentration of synthetic elements and minerals in synthetic blends. Therefore, when choosing synthetic blends, be sure to choose a brand that matches the performance of your vehicle.

Full Synthetic VS Synthetic Blend

This is a critical question for many. Sometimes a mixture can be all you need, but if you’re willing to spend a little more on fully synthetic engine oil, it’s worth it. The main thing to remember is that even if you choose the cheaper synthetic blend than fully synthetic oil, it is still a better choice than conventional engine oil.

You may have noticed that synthetic engine oil has become a requirement for most new vehicles today. This is mainly because manufacturers today are able to build cars with tighter tolerances than they did years ago with conventional oil.

The main difference is that a synthetic blend combines synthetic stocks with conventional engine oil, so you don’t get a pure base. With fully synthetic oil, you get a refined synthetic base in combination with the coveted additives. There are fewer impurities, and you can expect it to last longer than conventional oil and a synthetic blended oil before you need to change the oil.

Advantages of synthetic oil

  • It’s a cheaper option in the long run.

When using standard engine oil, you must change it after 3000 miles, while synthetic oil can last up to 7,000 miles. The cost may be high, but you’ll find it’s cheaper in the long run because you don’t have to change it from time to time.

It’s better for your car engine.

Besides its economic advantage, synthetic oil is better for your engine than standard oil. For example, it can give your car better lubrication and this can maximize the performance of your engine, extend its life and improve mileage. Synthetic oil keeps your engine running reliably even in cold weather.

  • Resistance to external influences

Another major advantage of synthetic oil is its resistance to various external elements such as thermal degradation, oxidation, and oil sludge. It also reduces evaporation loss, which is one of the main reasons for its long life.

We hope that these benefits will help convince you to switch from standard engine oil to synthetic engine oil.

Quick synthetic engine oil FAQ

There are always questions if you want to do something different with your vehicle. Often we ask ourselves the question of whether it is worth it. There is still concern about whether this could also harm our valuable car. So let’s take a look at some of the most common questions we’ve found about synthetic engine oil.

I have not used synthetic engine oil and would like to change. Will it damage my vehicle?

Answer: This is a common question because there are many myths about switching to synthetic engine oil. One of the reasons for this is that conventional engine oil tends to clog your engine so much that it blocks possible leaks that may have opened over time. If you switch to synthetic engine oil, the powerful detergents can remove these blockages and open the leaks. Note that these leaks should not be present at all and must be repaired. You may want to contact your trusted mechanic to see if a synthetic mix might be a more suitable option.

I have read somewhere that it is not recommended to use synthetic engine oil for a new engine. Is that true?

Answer: Although it is best to run the engine in before switching to synthetic engine oil, you may want to check your manual again. More and more car manufacturers are building vehicles that use synthetic oil because of its many advantages.

Can I use a synthetic oil evening if my car doesn’t have a high-performance engine?

Answer: Another common misconception is that synthetic oils are only intended for high performance engines. This is anything but the truth. Perhaps this was the case a long time ago. But today it is the oil of choice for anyone who really appreciates their car and wants their engine to perform at full power. Just make sure you buy the right viscosity thickness to meet your car’s needs.

Can I use conventional oil?

Answer: Many people are worried that they are sticking to the expensive alternative, regardless of its many benefits. Fortunately, if at any point you feel you can’t afford a synthetic oil or want to switch back, that’s no problem.

Can synthetic and conventional oils be blended?

Answer: Yes, many people do this for different reasons. Just make sure that both oils are suitable for mixing.
These are just some of the many questions people have about synthetic oils. If you feel that we have not answered your question here, we would be happy to hear from you and do our best to help you.

Follow-up

The decision to switch to the best synthetic oil is simple; the question is to find the right one. Unfortunately, with its great popularity over the years, more products below the expected quality have flooded the market. Finding the ideal oil can be difficult.

We hope our reviews of synthetic engine oils have helped you move in the right direction. The most important thing to remember is to read your vehicle’s manual carefully and always check the bottle of engine oil to make sure it fits perfectly with your engine’s requirements.

Fully Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic or Mineral Engine Oil?

Semi-synthetic oils are cheaper than fully synthetic as they are a mixture of synthetic and mineral oil. Engines requiring semi-synthetic oil must use at least semisynthetic oil (not mineral oil) but may benefit from upgrading to fully synthetic oil for increased protection and performance.

Best Synthetic Motor Oil

Conventional motor oil definitely serves its purpose, but synthetic improves on just about every aspect of conventional. Let’s look at why this is so, and how synthetic oil exactly works so you know how to choose the best option for your vehicle. Synthetic lubricants are artificially-made oils that are usually used as an alternative to conventional oils.

In short terms, they are used as a substitute for the most common lubricants refined from petroleum. Generally speaking, they provide superior mechanical and chemical properties as opposed to conventional mineral lubricants. Most car enthusiasts recommend them as they provide a huge range of benefits, especially if the car is driven in extreme conditions or is a performance vehicle.
